Roya Film House (RFH) was founded in 2003 to shine a light on the plight of women in Afghanistan through feature films, documentaries and TV series. It is the first woman-run and woman-oriented film company established in Afghanistan, a country where women are severely oppressed and women in film and media are persecuted. The film company has won prestigious international cinematic awards for its work. The company was founded by sisters Roya Sadat and Alka Sadat. Afghanistan is going through a transitional period says filmmaker Roya Sadat. Her feature in competition at the International Festival of Asian Film in Vesoul, France, shows the clash between strict tradition and broader choice. The film won the FICA Audience Award, the High-School Jury Award, and special mentions from the International Jury and Jury representing the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC).

Sadat grew up in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, meaning that she was confined to her home and could not go to school. She discovered cinema through a book and became fascinated by the medium. She used her time at home to write plays and drafts of a screenplay that eventually became her 2003 crime drama “Three Dots.” Sadat’s first act after the Taliban regime departed in 2001 was to begin shooting “Three Dots” (2003), set in her native city of Herat. In 2007, Roya Sadat made the first long Afghan TV series, and later Roya Film House produced famous series. Many fans from Afghanistan were watching their own stories. And for the young generation, the stories were inspiring and hopeful.

The photo archive reminds us that we made a film in the most difficult possible security and economic conditions in Afghanistan. Not only our films were shown in international festivals, but inside Afghanistan, the television series we produced opened important and valuable discussions about social life, equality, human rights... By making promotional videos, short documentaries and television series, he created financial conditions so that we could produce artistic fiction films.
Due to the security conditions of Nagura and the lack of political and security stability, foreign producers did not make films in Afghanistan until the latest film Song Sima, which happened, but unfortunately we faced a situation where it was no longer possible to make films in Afghanistan, Taliban took control of the country....and again the women voice and art become banded.
